About Us
In November 1882, Elias Ezra, son of Joseph Ezra, started the "Tehilla-le-David", later known as the "Ezras" Benevolent Institution, to provide education to underprivileged Jewish children. Hebrew and the Torah, translated to Arabic, were taught along with secular subjects.
After the death of Elias Ezra, the community took responsibility for this school, which later became "Talmud Torah Institution." In May 1909, the school moved to rented premises at45, In May. A generous donation in 1925 by Elias Meyer, the President of the School. A generous donation in Bow Bazar Street helped to build its present. It is now called "Elias Meyer Free School and Talmud Torah"
The school is recognised by the Government of West Bengal and affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Examinations, ICSE (X) & ISC(XII). It remains a free school for Jewish boys ONLY. All other pupils are required to pay full tuition fees.
Our branch at 1, Federation Street is co-educational and at present is up to class 7.
The school lays special emphasis on character building and on developing a soundeducation foundation through individual attention.
