SCHOOL HISTORY

In November 1882, Elias Ezra, son of Joseph Ezra started the "Tehilla-le-David", later known as the "Ezras" Benevolent Institution, to provide education to underprivileged Jewish Children. Hebrew and the Torah, translated to Arabic, were taught in the school along with other secular subjects.

After the death of Elias Ezra, the community took the responsibility of this school, which later came to be known as " The Talmud Torah Institution." In May 1909, the school moved to a rented premises at, Bow Bazar Street. A generous donation by Elias Meyer, the President of the school,helped to build its present premises in 1925. It is now called "Elias Meyer F.S.& T.Τ.".

The school is recognized by the Government of West Bengal and affiliated to the Council for ICSE and ISC Examinations. It remains a free school for Jewish Boys ONLY. Pupils of all other communities are required to pay full fee with changes that is made from time to time.

HONORARY SECRETARY

Dr.Jael Silliman has her doctorate in Education from Columbia University, a Masters degree from Harvard University in Administration & Planning in Education, another Masters in History from the University of Texas at Austin and her undergraduate degree in History & Political Science from Wellesley College.
She is an author of more than ten fiction & non-fiction books and has written & writes extensively for newspapers & magazines on issues of environment, heritage and Women’s rights.
She has been an educator all her life.

Ms. Pompa Dan is a remarkable educator who has devoted more than forty years to the noble profession of teaching and shaped generations. Beginning her career here, at Elias Meyer School in 1991, as an Assistant teacher, she brought patience, clarity and an inspiring love for learning, to every lesson. Over the decades she has guided hundreds of pupils,mentored countless young teachers and earned the deep respect of the colleagues and parents alike.

Under her guidance as Headmistress, our Federation Street Branch has grown stronger in both academic standards and value-based education. She leads with quiet authority, a keen sense of fairness and a commitment to creating a safe, inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to explore and excel. Her vision combines traditional discipline with modern teaching methods, ensuring that our children are prepared to face the challenges of the future.
